Giving Blogger a try
Friday, March 30, 2007, 12:07 AM - Announcements
I've grown tired of the blog I've been running. A couple of things have worn me down:
  • having the whole burden of administration
  • Being isolated running a blog out the wild Internet
  • The look and feel of the interface

As such, I've set up a blog on Blogger: Geek Quanta. We'll see how it goes.

I took a few minutes today and updated my resume. It's still in the middle of the Links section. Added a few things that I've done of late and cleaned it up just a little more.

Document Management - WhatchaGonnaWiki?
Sunday, February 26, 2006, 02:46 AM - Announcements
One of my intentions for my blog has been to document problems that I encounter and solutions I come up with in building, maintaing, and using my home network. While SimplePHPBlog is a great for posting blurbs about this or that, it's not so great for posting a lot of detailed technical write-ups. There are several reasons for this.

Firstly, the formatting options are a little thin. While they're adequate enough, they're not rich enough for a good technical document. Secondly, it seems to me that the look and feel isn't optimal for technical writeups. Lastly, the content management is a bit underpowered for a rich collection of documents.

The thought has occured to me that wiki software might be better for what I want. I've become rather impressed with Wikipedia lately. The site is run by WikiMedia software, which grew out of Wikipedia itself, if I understand it correctly.

I've downloaded and installed WikiMedia on my site, and it's up and running here. I've added just a little content, but will add much more as time allows. I've also added it to the Links section on the side.

New (old) stuff
Wednesday, August 17, 2005, 04:13 PM - Announcements
I've just taken a bit of time to reproduce a lot of the content from my original homepage to my new one here. To the right, under the links section, you will find a bit about myself, my resume, a list of my publications, and a list of geeky stuff like configuration files and Open Source software projects.

I'll probably add more as time goes on, but that's a start for now.

Site changeup
Tuesday, August 16, 2005, 01:15 AM - Announcements
For a while I've attempted to maintain my home-page using phpNuke. It's a fine web-site management package, but a little too complex for a simple home site. I do like the look it's provided my site with, but I'm interested in trying a solution that's a little more simple. I stumbled into simplephpblog, which appears to be a very slim & trim website package. So, I'm giving it a try.

One of the things I must say that I like about it right out is the use of phpbb-style tags. I've always found them to be more unobtrusive than HTML tags, making for a more casual writing environment.

In addition to that, Simplephpblog has a very clean interface. So far I've discovered the Categories feature, which is a very straightforward and simple way to organize my posts. I also encountered the Blocks feature, which will allow me to add additional blocks as are already seen on the right. I'm not sure what I'll put there, but it's nice to have the option. I expect over time that I'll start customizing this new site quite a bit.

What geek wouldn't, after all? ;-)
